At Wallan Dental, we use VELscope during adult oral examinations. VELscope is a tool used for enhanced oral cancer screening.

Oral cancer that is caught early has a survival rate of 80-90%. When not caught early, the survival rate is only approximately 30%.

Oral cancer screening with VELscope is easy and comfortable. Your dentist or hygienist will perform a visual exam, as well as a gentle “touch” exam using their fingers. At Wallan Dental, we also use the VELscope for oral cancer screening during comprehensive oral examination. For new patients, this is your first exam. For existing adult patients, a comprehensive dental exam is recommended once every 3- 5 years, depending on your dental condition. These recommendations are made by research supported experts and governing bodies in the dental industry in Ontario. Just as your physician recommends a thorough physical every year, your dentist recommends a thorough exam every 3-5 years.

VELscope oral cancer screening takes but 2 minutes to perform. It’s comfortable; we simply flash a special light in to your mouth that helps highlight any cells that may by abnormal or traumatized. Early detection helps save lives.
